Food is Medicine
The Oklahoma Impact Investing Collaborative, in collaboration with the Oklahoma State Department of Health, provided Pay for Success financing for a Food Is Medicine initiative launched in southeast Oklahoma to help individuals with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes improve their health through access to fresh, nutritious food. The initiative includes a produce prescription program, community health workers embedded in local hospitals, and rural transportation provided by local nonprofits.

“When doctors prescribe food and we pair it with recipes, lifestyle change, education, and local farmers, it’s more than a program—it’s a revolution in rural health care. These prescriptions fuel local farms, foster community and economic restoration, and regenerate both human and soil health.”
